When the Titanic sank into the Atlantic Ocean on the night of April 14, 1912, nearly 1,500 people died. One of the greatest maritime tragedies of all time, the catastrophe inspired James Cameron to create the now famous film “Titanic.”

But in addition to what we already know about the events of that night, filmmaker Arthur Jones wants to tell the story of those who escaped the Titanic and have not ever been able to tell their stories, the ones who never made it into the history books.

His documentary, “The Six,” tells the story of six Chinese passengers who survived the tragedy. He explains how they were able to survive and why their stories were never shared with the wider public.

“The Six” explains how they managed to escape without life jackets, and how they survived the bitter cold. They were then brought to Ellis Island, but were sent away the following morning due to the Chinese Exclusion Act.

The act, which went into effect on May 6, 1882, made it legal for the American government to turn away Chinese immigrants, as many believed they were stealing jobs from Americans in California.

Jones attempts to uncover their true identities and solve the mystery around a story that, so far, no one has paid much attention to. Using archives, political documents, and stories from their descendants, the documentary rewrites a small piece of fascinating history.

Arthur Jones has already made two other documentaries: “The Poseidon Project” covers the disappearance of the royal submarine HMS Poseidon following a collision with the Chinese coast in 1931, and “A Farewell Song” documents the lives of traditional Chinese musicians.

This third documentary is another passion project that investigates a subject close to his heart.

“The Six” is due to be released in 2018.
